In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist. Information is not disclosed without written permission. However, there are number of exceptions to this rule. Exceptions include: Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately. If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s. The therapist must notify the police and inform the intended victim. If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The therapist will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in insuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, further measures may be taken without their permission in order to ensure their safety.

People may seek counseling for several reasons. Some clients need temporary support in dealing with a crisis, illness, or family situation. Others enjoy having a neutral, outside observer to offer feedback and suggestions in response to their struggles. Still others need more direct guidance in learning how to change an unhealthy thought or behavioral pattern, learn healthier coping skills, change relationship dynamics, or resolve past childhood or trauma issues.

This is a common issue for clients beginning the counseling process. It may take several sessions to decide on specific goals; however Brandi can help you decide on a general direction in the first session.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes, unless the client requests additional time. It’s a good idea to meet weekly until significant progress has been made. Sometimes more than one session a week would be appropriate if a client is experiencing a crisis or extreme distress. During session, you’re expected to discuss the issues and concerns that are important to you or are troubling you. At times, Brandi may suggest activities outside of session to help further your progress, such as reading a book, writing, or practicing new skills you’ve learned.
